Geographic Information Science (GIS) Day is a worldwide event that celebrates the technology of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Today on 18 November 2020, McMaster University held their annual GIS Day joining hundreds of organizations from North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia in hosting virtual gatherings that will serve to ignite the imagination of the future geospatial innovators who will move the planet forward using GIS. This year, their event consisted of pre-recorded videos by members of the University community using GIS, talks focusing on themes relevant to both the social sciences and natural sciences. A virtual presentation by UNU-INWEH Senior Researcher, Dr Hamid Mehmood, titled “Geospatial Information Technology to support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals” is featured on The GIS Lab in the School of Earth, Environment & Society event page. In his presentation, Dr. Mehmood gives an overview of the GIS and remote sensing activities at UNU-INWEH, highlighting the Historical Flood Mapping tool which is currently in development.
