Water quality protection, water recycling and safe reuse, and safely managed sanitation are crucially important in an era when recovering water from the waste streams for use in agriculture and other sectors as well as recovering nutrients and energy are seen as multiple revenue streams that enhance the economic value of wastewater. Equally important is addressing Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) where SDG 6 is on water and sanitation and SDG target 6.2 highlights access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all; SDG target 6.3 emphasizes improvement in water quality by reducing pollution and halving the proportion of untreated wastewater, and at least doubling recycling and safe reuse globally; and SDG target 6.a highlights international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water recycling and reuse technologies, among others. This project addresses four interconnected aspects of wastewater with the following objectives:
- To evaluate the global and regional potential of wastewater as a water, nutrient, and energy resource.
- To develop an online risk assessment tool for environmental implications of irrigation with untreated or inadequately treated wastewater.
- To strengthen human capacity in developing countries leading to water related sustainable development through accelerated achievement of SDG targets 6.2, 6.3, and 6.a.
- To contribute to global and regional initiatives promoting water recycling and safe reuse.
