Through the dedication of project partners and volunteer scientists, the IW:Science project aims to enhance – through knowledge integration and information sharing – the use of science in the International Waters (IW) projects of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This project helps to strengthen priority setting, knowledge sharing, and results-based management in current and future projects.
The IW:Science project aims to create:
- The first-ever synopsis of the science behind the IW portfolio of projects to-date. This synopsis will be sorted according to transboundary IW system types: river basins, lakes, groundwater, coastal zone and land-based pollution, and large marine ecosystems and the open ocean.
- A systematic analysis of the IW portfolio and integrated knowledge from the wider scientific community with regards to critical emerging science issues, the application of science for adaptive management, and the development and use of indicators to support IW projects.
- An IW:Science knowledge management system with a fully integrated relational database of IW documents and suite of learning and communication tools. This tool will allow for the synopsis and analysis process of 5,500 documents.
