Chaeeun Shim is in the undergraduate degree programme for Materials Science Engineering in Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST), South Korea. She has taken many courses regarding the environment. One of the topics she studied was, ‘Adverse effects of banner ink on soil’ and actively campaigned for the environment at school.
Chaeeun went to the National University of Laos and studied the Mekong river with students, looking at the water quality and how to purify the water with membrane. She also taught the Laos children in rural areas about water borne diseases, as well as the importance of hand washing. She is very interested in studying the environment with focus on developing countries.
Chaeeun will be working under the supervision of Dr. Duminda Perera for two months. She will be working on the topic of Environmentally Persistent Pharmaceutical Pollutants – EPPP.
