As a critical component of the water cycle, wastewater is produced every moment and needs collection and treatment before its safe and fit-for-purpose use and/or disposal. A key aspect of wastewater treatment status is closely related to the economic status of the countries. The aggregated numbers on wastewater treatment suggest that high-income countries on average treat 70% of the generated wastewater, followed by upper-middle-income countries (38%), lower-middle-income countries (28%), and low-income countries where only 8% of the wastewater generated is treated.
This map presents wastewater treatment across the world at the national level.
